ConveyTranslating Latin, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, Sumerian, and Aramaic (Beta)
Alongside its living languages, Convey has beta support for five ancient and classical ones: Latin, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, Sumerian, and Aramaic. It's labeled beta deliberately — these are lower-resource languages for any translation model, ancient or dead languages included, and we'd rather say so plainly than overstate it.
Why bother with languages nobody speaks day-to-day
Students and readers working through Latin or Ancient Greek texts, people interested in Sanskrit philosophy or scripture in the original, and anyone curious what a Sumerian or Aramaic phrase actually says — this is a real, if smaller, audience than Convey's main living-language use case, and one most translation tools don't bother with at all.
What works the same as everywhere else in Convey
Photo translation, Define, and pronunciation (romanization, IPA, respelling, slowed-down audio) all work with these five the same way they do for any other language in the app — including Latin, where the pronunciation tools are genuinely useful given how disputed classical vs. ecclesiastical pronunciation can be.
The honest limit
Beta means beta: quality here hasn't been validated the way Convey's established languages have, simply because there's far less text data for any model to learn from in a dead language than a living one with millions of daily speakers. If something looks off, the feedback tools in the app go directly to us — for these five languages especially, that feedback is what actually improves them.
